A început fotbalul în 1976 la Argentinos Juniors76, dar a ajuns repede la Boca, clubul cu care a devenit campion și la care a rămas mereu un idol. A făcut parte din naționala Argentinei prezentă la Mondialul din Spania din 1982 - echipa era cazată la Barcelona și așa a intrat în vizorul Barcelonei. A jucat două sezoane în care a fost bolnav de hepatită și a suferit o accidentare serioasă la genunchi, dar a cucerit Cupa Spaniei, Supercupa Spaniei și Cupa Ligii. Dar gloria supremă o atinge cu naționala Argentinei cu care devine campion mondial în Mexic 1986 și finalist la Italia 1990.

Fostul mare fotbalist argentinian Diego Maradona a încetat din viaţă miercuri, la vârsta de 60 de ani, în urma unui stop cardiac, în locuinţa sa, a anunţat agentul şi prietenul său, Matias Morla, scrie agerpres.ro. Recent, Maradona suferise o intervenție chirurgicală pe creier după ce i se descoperise un cheag de sânge. Diego Armando Maradona a fost un fotbalist și antrenor argentinian. Acesta a fost considerat de către mulți din lumea fotbalului (inclusiv jurnaliști sportivi, foști și actuali jucători, fani, etc.) ca fiind cel mai mare fotbalist al tuturor timpurilor, împărțind cu Pelé titlul de Jucătorul Secolului decernat de FIFA.
